Summary

Tarpon & snook fishing in San Juan’s mangrove lagoons with expert captain

You’ll head out from San Juan with a local captain into quiet mangrove lagoons where tarpon and snook feed. Expect hands-on help with light tackle gear, cold drinks on board, and stories from your guide as you chase powerful fish beneath city towers you can barely see anymore. That first tug on your line will stick with you long after.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We met Captain Clery down at the Cangrejos Yacht Club, which honestly felt more like a secret dock tucked behind the city than a “marina.” He handed me a cold soda and grinned, already talking about the tarpon that hang out in Laguna San Jose. I could smell salt and something green — maybe the mangroves? The boat was simple but clean, rods lined up ready. I was nervous (I’m not exactly an expert), but Clery just said, “You’ll see.”

The run out from Isla Verde was quick — maybe ten minutes? — and suddenly we were surrounded by these red mangroves that looked endless, even though you could still spot hotel towers if you turned around. The water had this weird calm to it, broken only by little splashes. Clery pointed out some birds I’d never seen before and started prepping the light tackle gear. He showed me how to cast for tarpon and snook; my first try was… well, let’s say not my best work. He laughed and said everyone does that their first time.

I hooked something heavy after about half an hour — my heart went wild thinking it was the Silver King itself (tarpon). It jumped once, all silver scales flashing, then spat the hook right back at me. Didn’t expect to feel so gutted about losing a fish! We kept going; there were jacks too, and I actually landed one after a lot of fumbling. The sun kept shifting through the clouds, making everything look gold for a second before going flat again. At some point I realized I’d stopped checking my phone completely.

On the way back in, Clery told stories about people coming from all over just to fish here — apparently some tarpon get up to 150 lbs? That sounded unreal until he showed me a photo on his phone of this guy holding one almost as big as himself. I still think about that jumpy flash of silver in the water; maybe next time I’ll land it. Or maybe it’s better this way.
