What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me was the smell—wet leaves, earthy and sharp, right as we stepped out of the van near Yokahu Tower. Our guide, Ana, handed out bottled water (needed it) and pointed up at this old concrete tower poking through the trees. The view from the top made my knees wobble a bit—clouds rolling over endless green. Someone behind me said it looked like broccoli from above. I laughed because…yeah, it kind of did.

We wound back down and drove past La Coca waterfall—couldn’t stop because of construction (Ana apologized in that way only locals can: “It’ll be prettier next time, I promise”). You still catch a glimpse from the van though—the water’s louder than you’d think. Then came the hike. Not gonna lie, parts were muddy enough to make my sneakers squelch. Ana kept us moving with stories about coquí frogs and how the Taino people saw this forest as sacred. Sometimes she’d just stop mid-sentence when a bird called out—like she didn’t want to talk over them.

After about 45 minutes we reached a river pool tucked under thick branches. Some people jumped right in; I hesitated (cold!) but ended up wading in anyway. The water was clearer than expected—felt like it washed off more than just sweat. I remember one guy trying to skip stones while his daughter shrieked every time he missed.
