experience

What’s the experience like?

Ever wonder if a place can actually feel like a fairytale? I didn’t expect Sintra to get under my skin the way it did. We left Lisbon early—our guide, João, had that kind of gentle humor that makes you relax even before the caffeine hits. The drive was all misty hills and those little white houses you see in postcards. When we reached Pena Palace, it looked almost too bright against the gray sky—reds and yellows popping out of the fog. João handed us our skip-the-line tickets (thank god) and told a story about Portuguese kings hiding love letters in the gardens. Not sure if he was joking, but I liked imagining it.

The palace itself is sort of chaotic in a good way—tiles everywhere, cold stone under your hand on the railings, towers poking up at odd angles. There was this moment when we stepped onto a terrace and suddenly the clouds parted for just a second—you could see all the way to the Atlantic. Someone behind me gasped (maybe me). Afterward, wandering through Sintra’s old center felt slower. We ducked into a tiny bakery for travesseiros—flaky pillows filled with almond cream—and I still remember how warm they felt in my hands while we watched locals chatting over coffee. João tried to teach us how to say “obrigado” properly; I probably butchered it but he just laughed.

Cabo da Roca was wild—the wind almost stole my hat and there’s this sharp salty smell that hits you as soon as you step out of the van. It really does feel like standing at the edge of Europe; waves crashing below and nothing but sea ahead. On the way back, I kept thinking about those palace colors and that almond pastry. I guess some places just stick with you longer than you expect.
