What’s included

Your day includes all technical equipment needed for canyoning—wetsuit, helmet, harness—plus activity insurance so you can focus on having fun without worry. Certified local guides lead every step and capture photos or videos along the way so you don’t need to bring anything extra except maybe dry clothes for after.

We met up at this little gravel lot near Salto do Cabrito — you could already hear water crashing somewhere behind the trees. Our guide, Tiago, handed out wetsuits and helmets while cracking jokes about how we’d look like penguins (not totally wrong). I was honestly nervous about canyoning in São Miguel, but he walked us through every bit of gear and what to expect. The hike to the river was short but steep enough that I felt my legs wake up. There was this earthy smell in the air — wet moss, maybe a hint of sulfur from the geothermal stuff around here.

The first jump wasn’t high, but standing on that slippery rock felt way taller than it looked from below. Tiago just grinned and counted down for me — “Três, dois, um!” — so I went for it before my brain could argue. Cold water slapped my face and then I popped up laughing. We did a mix of sliding over smooth rocks (my favorite part, honestly) and rappelling down waterfalls. The biggest drop was 16 meters — I tried not to look down too long. My hands were shaking a bit but the rope felt solid and Tiago kept talking us through it from above. At one point someone in our group tried to say “Salto do Cabrito” properly; Tiago’s laugh echoed off the canyon walls.

By the time we reached the last waterfall — the famous one — my arms were tired but I didn’t want it to end yet. Sunlight hit the spray just right and everything shimmered for a second. It’s weird how quiet it got between splashes; just water dripping off your helmet and your own breathing echoing back at you. They took photos of us mid-jump (I’m pretty sure mine is just flailing limbs). We peeled off our wetsuits by the van with numb fingers, swapping stories about who screamed loudest on which jump. Still thinking about that view now when things go quiet back home.
