If you want to learn surfing without crowds and get local tips for food and hidden beaches near Lisbon, this is your day. Friendly coaching, all gear included—just bring your curiosity (and maybe an appetite for seafood).
Salt in the air, sand between your toes—right as we stepped onto the beach at Costa da Caparica, you could smell grilled sardines from a nearby kiosk mixing with the ocean breeze. Our surf coach, João, greeted us at this laid-back beach house—nothing fancy, just boards stacked by the door and wetsuits hanging out to dry. The sun was already warming up the sand, but you could still feel that cool Atlantic wind on your face.
We got our wetsuits on (they had every size, even for my friend who’s taller than most doors) and grabbed boards that looked almost too big to carry. João ran through the basics—how to pop up, where to look, how not to nose-dive—and then we hit the water. I’ll admit, paddling out was tougher than it looks on YouTube. But after a few tries and some good-natured teasing from my friends, I actually caught a wave. Not graceful, but hey—I stood up! The best part? Nobody cared about falling; everyone just laughed and tried again.
The session lasted about two hours, but honestly time flew by. Afterward, we rinsed off and João shared his favorite local hangouts—he pointed us toward a tiny seafood spot tucked behind some dunes (I think it was called “O Barbas”—locals love it). He also told us about this little train—the Transpraia—that chugs along the coastline if you want to hop between quieter beaches away from crowds. We ended up grabbing lunch there: grilled fish so fresh you could taste the sea in every bite.
