The first thing I noticed was the salt on my lips — that, and how the RIB boat bounced a little more than I’d expected when we left Portimão’s pier. Our guide João grinned at us over his shoulder, hair already wild from the wind, and pointed out the old Fort of Santa Catarina sitting right above the water. It looked almost faded in the morning light, but you could still imagine it watching over the harbor for centuries. There was this mix of diesel smell and sea air — not unpleasant, just real.
