Summary

Wander Lisbon’s oldest streets, taste wine and pastel de nata

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the sound — shoes on old stones in Alfama, echoing up those narrow lanes. Our guide, Joana, waved us over by a faded yellow wall (she said it was older than the United States). She pointed out laundry flapping above us and told us about fado music drifting from windows at night. I could smell grilled sardines somewhere nearby, even though it was barely noon. It felt both busy and slow at the same time.

I kept losing track of which square we were in — Rossio, then Restauradores, then suddenly we were standing under the crazy ironwork of the Santa Justa Lift. There’s this moment where you look out and see all the red roofs tumbling toward the river. Joana handed around tiny glasses of vinho verde with a salty little tapa (I honestly can’t remember what it was called — something with cod?), and everyone just went quiet for a second. The city feels different when you stop moving.

We ducked into St. Dominic’s Church — it still smells faintly like smoke from that old fire, which Joana explained happened decades ago but left these blackened pillars as a reminder. In Chiado, she pointed out cafés where poets used to argue about politics (she said they still do). I tried to order a coffee in Portuguese and got laughed at by the barista — in a nice way. And that pastel de nata… warm, flaky, cinnamon on top. I ate mine too fast and kind of regret it now.

I didn’t expect to feel so connected to Lisbon after just one morning, honestly. Maybe it’s the way Joana talked about her city — or maybe it’s just something about those hills and how everyone seems to know each other here. Anyway, I still think about that view from Largo do Carmo sometimes.
