“That’s the old post office — it looks quiet now, but in ’39…” That’s how our guide, Piotr, started as we zipped through Gdańsk in this little electric buggy. I’d barely sat down before he was pointing out bullet marks on the wall. The city feels different when you’re eye-level with the cobblestones and not rushing past on foot. There was a breeze coming off the Motława River and that faint smell of bakery somewhere — maybe someone else caught it too? Anyway, we rolled right into Long Market, people watching us from café tables like we were part of the show.

I didn’t expect to see so much in just an hour. We passed St. Mary’s Church (the brickwork is wild up close), then Piotr slowed at the Amber Museum — he told us how his grandmother used to polish amber at home, which made me think about all these little side stories cities hold. The WWII Museum looked almost too modern for the neighborhood but somehow fit. At one point I tried to pronounce “Kościół św. Mikołaja” and Piotr grinned — “Not bad!” (he was being polite).
