You’ll scramble through Oman’s wild Snake Canyon with a local guide—jumping into pools, abseiling down rock faces, sharing laughs (and maybe nerves), then refueling with a traditional Omani lunch under open sky. It’s an adventure that leaves you both exhausted and oddly peaceful—one of those days you’ll remember long after your shoes dry out.
I’ll be honest — I almost bailed when I saw the first drop into Snake Canyon. Something about the way the light bounced off those pale stone walls made it look deeper than I’d pictured. But Abdul (our guide) just grinned and said, “Trust me, you’ll love this part.” So I took a breath that tasted like dust and wild thyme, and in we went.
The hike itself is about 6km but it doesn’t feel like any trail I’ve done before. You’re scrambling over boulders slick from last night’s rain, wading through pools so clear you can see your toes wriggling. There’s this moment where you have to abseil down maybe 25 meters — my hands were shaking but the gear felt solid and Abdul kept cracking jokes in between checking our harnesses (“Don’t worry, my cousin fixes these ropes every week!”). The canyon echoes everything — laughter, splashes, even the sound of your own heart if you listen close enough. At one point I tried to say “thank you” in Arabic and got it wrong; Abdul just laughed and taught me again while we waited for everyone to catch up.
Lunch was simple — rice, spiced chicken, dates — but after five hours of moving through water and sun it tasted better than anything fancy. We sat on flat rocks still warm from the morning heat and shared stories about growing up near Jebel Shams. There was something grounding about eating together like that, shoes off, hands still smelling faintly of rope and river. The drive back was quiet; everyone a little tired but in that good way where your body feels used up for all the right reasons.
