You’ll board a traditional Omani dhow in Khasab for a full-day cruise through Musandam’s fjords. Watch wild dolphins leap beside the boat, snorkel near Telegraph Island’s rocky shores, and relax over a fresh local lunch on deck. With swimming stops at Seebi Island and stories from your guide along the way, it’s an easygoing day that lingers long after you’re back on land.
"Did you see that splash?" our guide called out, grinning as a dolphin arched through the water just off the side of our wooden dhow. I’d barely settled onto the big red cushions when the first pod showed up — honestly, I didn’t expect to see them so soon. The air smelled faintly salty and sweet, like wet wood and fruit. There was this gentle hush between everyone as we drifted into Khor Sham fjord, broken only by the slap of water against the hull and someone’s laughter echoing off the cliffs.
We stopped at Telegraph Island — which our captain joked was “famous for driving British soldiers mad,” though he said it with a wink. The rocks were warm underfoot when I jumped in for snorkeling (I hesitated at first; water looked cold but wasn’t). Fish darted everywhere, flashes of blue and yellow. Lunch was served right there on deck: fried rice, chicken and fish fry, Arabic bread still soft in my hands. I probably ate more hummus than anyone else. There was tea too — strong and slightly smoky — which hit differently after swimming.
Later we anchored near Seebi Island for another swim. The light had shifted by then, turning everything gold. Some folks napped on deck; others tried to spot more dolphins (we did). Our guide told stories about the fishing villages we passed — little clusters of houses tucked into impossible places along the cliffs. I kept thinking how quiet it felt out there compared to anywhere else I’ve been. It’s funny how you remember those small silences as much as anything else.
