Summary

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Adventure & Sami Tapas Near Alta

If you're after something real near Alta—think sleigh rides with friendly horses, meeting sheep up close, and sharing Arctic tapas by a fire in a Sami tent—this is it. You'll get picked up right from town and everything's sorted for you, even warm clothes if you need them.

experience

What’s the experience like?

Snow squeaks under your boots as you step out at Omdal farm—just outside Alta, but it feels like another world. Our guide, Kari, greeted us with a quick laugh and handed out thick mittens (trust me, you'll want them). The air was sharp and clean, with that faint woodsmoke smell drifting from the lavvo tent nearby. We bundled up under heavy blankets in the sleigh, cheeks already tingling from the cold. The Norwegian fjord horses—stocky and calm, just like in that Disney movie—waited patiently while we settled in.

The ride itself? It’s quiet except for the soft jingle of harness bells and the crunch of snow as we glide through Mathisdalen valley. Sometimes you catch a glimpse of distant mountains turning pink as the sun dips low. If you’re lucky (we weren’t this time), the northern lights might dance overhead. Back at the farm, we wandered over to say hi to the short-tailed sheep—one nibbled my glove before trotting off. Inside the lavvo, there’s a fire crackling and plates of local meats, cheese, and fish laid out for us to try. Coffee tastes better when your hands are still warming up from outside.
