experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the way the Old Cathedral of Managua just sits there — not quite ruined, not quite whole. Our guide, Maribel, told us how it survived earthquakes and revolutions, her voice kind of soft when she pointed out the bullet marks on the stone. There was a faint smell of dust and flowers from the little stalls nearby, and I remember thinking how much history can fit into one square.

We wandered over to the National Palace of Culture next (it’s literally right there), where Maribel somehow made old maps and faded photographs feel alive. She joked about her school trips here as a kid — “we all thought it was haunted,” she laughed. The Ruben Dario National Theatre is just around the corner; we didn’t go inside but stood outside in the sun while she explained why everyone in Nicaragua knows his poems by heart. I tried to read one off my phone but gave up halfway through — Spanish tongue-twisters are no joke.

I didn’t expect Tiscapa Lagoon to be so green or so quiet. You can see all of Managua from up there, plus that giant silhouette of Sandino watching over everything. The breeze smelled like wet earth and something sweet I couldn’t place. After that, we ended up at a local market — loud, busy, full of color and people selling hammocks or fried snacks (I still regret not trying whatever those plantain things were). We finished at the lakeside promenade watching kids run around while old men played dominoes under a tree. It felt like a city still figuring itself out, but somehow welcoming anyway.
