You’ll walk Waiheke’s twin headlands with a local guide who knows every view and shortcut. Expect sea air, native birds, art-filled reserves, and a relaxed lunch in Oneroa Village—all at your own pace.
Salt in the air hits you as soon as you step off the ferry at Matiatia. Our guide—local, chatty, knows every shortcut—waves us over and we’re off. The morning light bounces off the water, and there’s this soft crunch underfoot from the gravel path. Sometimes we start with the northern route, sometimes the southern; it all depends on the tide (I never realized how much that matters until today). On our first stretch around Matiatia headland, we spot shags drying their wings on rocks and hear tui birds calling from somewhere up in the manuka trees. If you’re lucky—and I mean really lucky—you might catch a glimpse of dolphins or even an orca out past Owhanake Bay. The guide points out native plants I’d have walked right by otherwise.
Lunch is a real treat in Oneroa Village. You can grab a seat at one of those little cafés with chalkboard menus or just pick up something fresh from the bakery and picnic down on the sand. Afterward, we set off again for Church Bay. The southern route winds through Pio Rehutai Reserve—there’s this earthy smell after last night’s rain—and then suddenly you’re walking past sculptures tucked into bushy corners. Some of the homes along here are wild—glass walls facing straight out to sea. We pass hidden coves where locals swim when it’s warm enough (not today though; bit chilly). All along, our guide shares stories about the island and its history—stuff you won’t find in any brochure.
If you’re comfortable walking for about five hours over hilly ground (with breaks), you’ll be fine! It’s not a race—we go at an easy pace.
The walk goes ahead rain or shine—just bring a raincoat and good shoes. The island feels different in wet weather but still beautiful.
Yes, service animals are welcome on this tour.
Lunch is included—you can choose to eat at a local café or take your meal down to the beach for a picnic.
Your day includes lunch, return transfers to/from the ferry or your accommodation on Waiheke, walking maps, and expert guiding throughout both headlands. Just bring comfy shoes and some sun protection—we’ll handle everything else!
