The Experience

The evening starts with warriors in traditional dress paddling an ancient canoe down Wai-o-Whiro stream—you watch from a platform as they demonstrate the old ways of travel and combat. From there you move into the performance space to see the haka, hear traditional instruments, and watch scenes that tell the history of the village and the people who lived here. The stories unfold through the performers' movements and voices, not narration; you're watching, not being lectured.

After the performance, you sit down to hangi served from a buffet with side dishes and dessert. Hangi is the traditional earth oven method of cooking—the food has been slow-cooked underground, and this is the real version, not a restaurant approximation. Tea, coffee and spring water are included; if you want alcohol, you can order it at the bar. The meal gives you time to talk with other visitors and settle into the pace of the evening.

Once you've eaten, a guide leads a short walk into the forest.
