Summary

Cycle lakeside cliffs, floating cafés and vineyard stops on Lake Dunstan trail

You’ll cycle lakeside cliffs from Cromwell to Clyde on an e-bike, pausing for wine at Carrick Winery or coffee afloat on Lake Dunstan. With info boards along the way and a friendly local shuttle back (plus all your gear sorted), you’ll finish tired but grinning — it’s that kind of day.

experience

What’s the experience like?

It’s quiet except for the crunch of gravel under our tires and the lake glinting off to the left — that blue is almost too much. The Lake Dunstan Cycleway starts out easy enough from Cromwell, but it’s not long before we’re weaving past rocky bluffs and I’m realizing how high up these “clip-ons” actually are. Our guide at the rental shop had grinned when he handed me the helmet (“You’ll want this on the switchbacks!”), and yeah, he wasn’t kidding. There’s a chill in the air even though it’s sunny — you get that in Central Otago — and every so often you catch a whiff of wild thyme or just plain dust.

We stopped at Carrick Winery because, honestly, my legs needed a break (I’d switched my e-bike to full assist by then — no shame). The staff poured us something crisp and local; there was this easy laughter between tables, half Kiwi accents and a few cyclists comparing mud splatters. Later on, we found this floating coffee barge bobbing near the shore. I ordered a flat white and almost dropped it trying to take a photo of the Hugo Suspension Bridge. It’s wobbly in all the right ways — not scary, just enough to remind you you’re somewhere new.

The middle stretch is quiet — 25km with no road access, just us and occasional info boards about gold miners or dam builders. I read one out loud while my friend fiddled with her gears; she pretended not to listen but later asked about sluicing (so maybe she was). By the time we rolled into Clyde, legs buzzing but weirdly happy, we’d already decided to grab a drink before meeting our shuttle driver. He waved us over with that classic Kiwi “all good?” and somehow remembered our names from check-in hours earlier. The ride back felt like sinking into soft seats after a long swim — tired in a good way.
