This day trip is about wild landscapes and small moments that stick with you long after you’re back in town.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the wind — sharp and a bit wild up on Mount Eden, like it wanted to remind us we were standing on an old volcano. Our guide, Jamie, pointed out the crater below and told us how Auckland sits on dozens of these ancient giants. I tried to imagine the city before all the buildings, just green hills and Māori stories. Jamie had a way of weaving in little facts without making it feel like school. The grass was still damp from last night’s rain and my shoes got muddy right away (should’ve worn boots).

Driving out to Piha Beach felt like leaving the city behind for good — suddenly there were ferns everywhere and the air smelled like salt mixed with something sweet from the bush. Piha’s black sand was warm underfoot, almost sticky. We walked towards The Keyhole while some surfers zipped past with boards bigger than they were. I picked up a stone that looked like it belonged on another planet; Li, another traveler, laughed at how long I stared at it. There’s something about that place that makes you quiet for a bit.

Karekare Falls wasn’t far — just a short hike through trees dripping with water. The sound of the falls got louder before we saw them, then there it was: cold spray on my face, light bouncing off mossy rocks. Lunch was at a bakery where I ordered something I couldn’t pronounce (Jamie grinned when I tried), then off to Soljans Winery for a tasting. Five wines later — honestly, I only remember liking the third one best — we piled back into the van feeling sleepy but happy. They dropped me off at Mission Bay because I wanted one last look at the water before heading back.
