What’s included

Your day includes pickup right at Walvis Bay port after your cruise docks; all 4x4 transport with a knowledgeable local driver-guide; entry permits; plenty of cold drinks including water, soda, beer and sparkling wine; plus a light picnic lunch served against those wild desert dunes before returning to port.

The first thing I noticed stepping out at Walvis Bay port was the salty air—sharp, almost metallic. Our guide, Joseph, waved us over with this big grin and somehow remembered everyone’s name from the list. We piled into the 4x4 and before I’d even finished my coffee, we were rolling past the lagoon. There were flamingos everywhere—honestly more than I expected—and Joseph pointed out a pelican strutting like he owned the place. The salt pans looked weirdly pink in the morning light, kind of surreal, and someone in our group asked if it was safe to eat (it’s not, apparently).

Driving out toward Sandwich Harbour felt like crossing into another world. The sand got softer under the tires and you could hear it crunching when we stopped for photos. The Atlantic was right there—so close you could taste sea spray if you stuck your head out. At one point Joseph said something about “if tides permit,” which made me laugh because he sounded so official but then admitted sometimes they just have to wing it if the ocean gets pushy. We surfed up these massive dunes—I clutched my seat more than once—and then just sat at the top for a while, wind whipping around and everyone suddenly quiet. It’s hard to describe that feeling.

Lunch was simple but hit the spot: cold drinks, sandwiches, fruit. Sitting on a blanket with sand in my shoes and that endless desert behind us felt oddly peaceful. A springbok darted by in the distance while we tried sparkling wine (Namibian bubbles—who knew?). On our way back through Kuiseb River Delta, Joseph slowed down so we could spot oryx and ostrich—he joked they were “the locals who never leave.” I still think about that view from the top of the dune; it sneaks up on you later when you’re back on your ship.
