If you want a real taste of Morocco’s wild side without going too far from Marrakech, this day trip is perfect. You’ll see huge waterfalls, meet local guides who know every shortcut, and even get close enough to feel the spray on your skin—all with easy transport and no hassle.
The air felt cooler as we left Marrakech behind, winding through olive groves and tiny roadside cafés where locals sipped mint tea. Our guide, Youssef, had us laughing before we even reached the Middle Atlas foothills. By mid-morning, we pulled up at Ouzoud village—already you could hear the rush of water in the distance and spot monkeys darting between fig trees.
Walking down the red earth path, I noticed how the spray from the falls mixed with the smell of wild thyme. The Cascades d’Ouzoud are taller than you’d expect—110 meters straight down into a rocky basin. Youssef pointed out old grinding mills tucked behind shrubs; apparently, “Ouzoud” means “grinding grain” in Berber, which made sense once he explained how villagers used to harness all that water power.
We hopped onto a little wooden boat for a quick ride right up to the base. You get close enough to feel the mist on your face—my shirt was damp for hours after. There’s time to wander along shaded trails or grab a snack from one of those simple stalls (the orange juice is fresh-squeezed and cold). On our way back up, we watched Barbary apes sneak crumbs from picnickers—don’t leave your bag open! By late afternoon, it was back in the minibus, windows down, everyone a bit sun-tired but happy.
It’s about a 2.5–3 hour drive each way, depending on traffic and stops along the route.
You’ll walk down and back up some uneven paths near the falls—nothing too tough if you’re reasonably fit. Good shoes help!
Yes! Children are welcome but must be with an adult at all times for safety around the water and trails.
A hat, sunscreen, comfy shoes with grip (it can get slippery), some cash for snacks or tips, and maybe a light jacket—the mountains are cooler than Marrakech.
Your round-trip transport in an air-conditioned minibus is sorted. There’s a friendly driver-guide with you all day. You’ll get a short guided walk at Ouzoud Falls plus a fun little boat ride right up close to the water. Fuel costs are covered too—just bring your sense of adventure!
