experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the way the morning light hit the pink walls around Jamaa El Fna — kind of dusty, but warm. Our guide, Youssef, waved us over by Hotel Ali and grinned like he’d been waiting all week to show someone around. There was this low hum from the square: vendors setting up, a distant call to prayer, and that smell — spices and something sweet I couldn’t place. We set off toward the Koutoubia Mosque, which honestly looks even bigger in person than in photos. Youssef told us it’s been standing there since the 12th century. I tried to imagine what Marrakech sounded like back then. Probably not so many mopeds.

Bab Agnaou came next — one of those old city gates you see in postcards, but up close you can see where the stone’s chipped and faded blue paint lingers in cracks. Youssef pointed out some Berber script carved above the arch; he said his grandmother still speaks Tamazight at home. I asked him how to say “thank you” and absolutely butchered it (he laughed, which helped). The streets got narrower after that, twisting between shops selling leather slippers and piles of oranges. At one point a cat darted between our feet chasing a bit of string — nobody seemed surprised except me.

We made our way to Bahia Palace — all tiled courtyards and sunlight bouncing off mosaics. There was this faint scent of orange blossom somewhere in the air (or maybe just my imagination). Inside, it felt cooler and quieter than outside; you could almost forget about the city noise for a second. Youssef explained how each room had its own story, but honestly I kept getting distracted by how smooth the marble floors felt under my sandals. By then my head was spinning with dates and names, but it didn’t really matter — just being there felt like enough.
