experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the echo of footsteps in the narrow alleyways — that and the smell of oranges from a nearby stall. Our guide, Youssef, greeted us right outside our riad (he actually knew the owner, which made me laugh), and we set off into the maze of Marrakech’s old Medina. I’d read about this place but nothing really prepares you for how alive it feels — scooters weaving past, someone calling out “balak!” as they hurry by with a cart piled high with mint.

We stopped at Koutoubia Mosque just as the call to prayer started drifting over the rooftops. Youssef explained how it’s been standing since the 12th century — honestly, I kept staring at those sandstone walls trying to picture all the people who’ve passed by here. He pointed out some details I would’ve missed: the way sunlight hits certain tiles, or how locals use hand gestures when talking about directions (I tried to copy one and nearly sent us down the wrong street).

Bahia Palace was next — cool stone underfoot and these bursts of color everywhere: painted ceilings, carved doors, even a stray cat curled up in a patch of sun. There was this faint scent of cedarwood inside, mixed with something sweet from a courtyard garden. We wandered through rooms where sultans once lived; I didn’t expect to feel so small in all that space. Later at Marrakesh Museum, Youssef showed us ceramics and old clothes — he joked about his grandmother still having some like them at home.

I think my favorite part was Jemaa el-Fna square near sunset. It’s loud and chaotic in a way that somehow makes sense: snake charmers playing flutes, juice sellers waving cups in your face, someone telling stories in Arabic while kids giggle nearby. I tried fresh orange juice (tart and cold) while Youssef chatted with an old friend who runs one of the stalls. The light turned gold on everyone’s faces — I still think about that view sometimes when things are quiet back home.
