What’s included

Your day includes pickup by air-conditioned private vehicle from your hotel or riad in Fez, bottled water for each guest along the way, all guiding services from a licensed local expert who leads both walking through the medina and sightseeing around the ramparts by car—and plenty of chances to pause wherever curiosity takes you before returning comfortably at tour’s end.

The first thing I noticed was the way the light hit the tiles at Bab Boujloud — that blue just glows against the dust and chatter of Fez. Our guide, Youssef, greeted us right there (he called it “the Blue Gate” in English), and honestly, I was already a little lost in the swirl of people and colors before we’d even started. He laughed when I tried to pronounce Medersa Bou Inania — I definitely didn’t get it right — but he said not to worry, “everyone gets tangled up in Fassi words.”

Inside the medina, it felt like time folded in on itself. The air changed—spices and leather mixed together near Chouara Tanneries. You can actually smell it before you see it; sharp and earthy at once. Youssef handed me a sprig of mint to hold under my nose (I guess that’s the trick), but honestly, after a minute or two I kind of liked how real it felt. We watched men working waist-deep in dye vats—one waved up at us with bright red hands. Sometimes you just have to stand still and take it all in.

I kept losing track of which alley led where. Youssef seemed to know every shortcut—he pointed out copper workers hammering away in Seffarine Square, sparks flying everywhere, and then we ducked into the Nejjarine Museum for a quick breather from the crowd. The wooden doors there are so smooth from centuries of hands passing over them. There were moments when I felt like I could almost hear echoes from hundreds of years ago—maybe that sounds dramatic but…well, Fez does that to you.

The second part was by car around the ramparts—honestly a relief after all those winding streets. At Dar el Makhzen (the Royal Palace gates), sunlight bounced off gold doors so bright you almost had to squint. We drove through Mellah—the old Jewish quarter—and Youssef told stories about his grandmother buying spices here as a girl. The pottery workshop was loud with laughter and clinking tiles; Li tried her hand at painting one but ended up with more paint on her fingers than on the tile itself.

Borj Sud gave us this wide-open view over all those rooftops and minarets—late afternoon haze softening everything below. I still think about that silence up there after so much noise inside the medina. Sometimes travel is just about standing somewhere new and letting your brain catch up to your eyes.
