What’s included

Your three days include hotel or riad pickup in Fes, travel by air-conditioned minivan with a professional driver who knows every twist in the Atlas roads, two nights’ accommodation (one at a desert camp among Erg Chebbi’s dunes), camel ride into camp at sunset, plus traditional Moroccan meals along the way before returning comfortably back to Fes or continuing on to Marrakech if you wish.

I’ll be honest — we almost missed our pickup in Fes because I couldn’t find my other sandal (classic me). Our driver, Hassan, just grinned when we finally tumbled into the van, still tying my laces. He didn’t rush us, just said something about “Moroccan time” and cranked up the radio. The road out of Fes cut through morning fog, and by the time we reached Ifrane — which really does look like a Swiss postcard but with stray cats instead of cows — I’d started to relax. We stopped for coffee that tasted slightly burnt but somehow perfect in the chilly air.

The cedar forest near Azrou was full of macaque monkeys. One of them tried to steal an apple right out of my hand (he won). There were Berber men selling little wooden carvings at the roadside, waving as we passed. Lunch in Midelt was tagine and bread so fresh it steamed when you tore it open. The Ziz Valley opened up suddenly after a bend — palm trees everywhere, green against all that dusty rock. Hassan pointed out a river below and told us stories about his childhood there; I caught maybe half of it but felt the warmth anyway.

Merzouga appeared just as the sun started turning everything gold. I’d read about camel treks but didn’t expect how quiet it would feel riding out into those dunes — just the sound of sand shifting under hooves and someone humming behind me (maybe one of our guides?). At camp, dinner was madfona cooked over coals and sweet mint tea poured high into tiny glasses. Afterward we sat around a fire with our Berber hosts; they played drums under a sky so clear I lost count of shooting stars. There was a moment when everyone fell silent except for the crackle of wood — I still think about that calm.

The next morning came too early but worth it for sunrise over Erg Chebbi’s dunes. My shoes filled with sand on the walk back (I’m still finding grains in my bag), but breakfast tasted better than any hotel buffet could ever manage. The drive back toward Fes felt quieter somehow; maybe everyone was tired or maybe we were just letting it all sink in.
