experience

What’s the experience like?

The morning air in Marrakech still felt cool when we met our guide near Café de France in Jemaa el-Fna. He greeted us with a quick smile and a story about his childhood in the mountains. Our minivan wound out of the city, past roadside orange sellers and olive groves, until the city noise faded behind us. The Atlas Mountains started to rise ahead—snow on the peaks even though it was warm down below.

We stopped for a short camel ride just outside a tiny village. The camels looked sleepy but friendly; mine kept turning its head as if checking I was still there. The slow sway gave me time to notice how the air smelled—kind of earthy, mixed with mint from someone’s nearby garden. Afterward, we drove deeper into the valleys: Asni, Amizmiz, and finally Imlil. Each one had its own feel—some busier with market stalls, others quiet except for goats clattering over stones.

Our guide led us through narrow paths between stone houses in one of the Berber villages. Kids waved at us from rooftops. We were invited into a family home for sweet mint tea and homemade bread—honestly, I’ve never tasted honey quite like that before. The family told us about daily life here; it’s simple but full of small joys. Later, we hiked up toward a waterfall where cold spray hit my face and birds darted overhead. On the way back, we visited an argan oil cooperative run by local women—they showed us how they crack the nuts by hand (it’s harder than it looks!).

By late afternoon, we were back in Marrakech—dusty shoes and all—but with memories that felt much bigger than just one day out of the city.
