You’ll swap city buzz for desert calm on this sunset camel trek near Marrakech. Dress up Tuareg-style, ride over Agafay’s rocky dunes, then relax with mint tea in a Berber tent as local music drifts through the air.
The first thing I noticed as we left Marrakech was how the city’s noise faded away, replaced by dry wind and that faint, earthy smell you only get outside town. Our driver chatted about his favorite football team while we watched the landscape shift—olive groves giving way to rocky hills. It took just under an hour before the road turned dusty and we spotted the camels waiting, their handlers already waving.
Before hopping on, our guide wrapped a blue turban around my head and handed me a striped djellaba. The fabric felt rough but kept the sun off my neck. Climbing onto the dromedary was awkward at first—those animals are taller than they look! Once we got moving, it was all slow swaying and soft crunches of gravel under hooves. There’s this quiet out there; even when someone’s phone beeped, it felt out of place. We stopped halfway up a ridge just as the sky started turning orange and pink—everyone pulled out their phones for photos, but honestly, it looked better without a screen.
After the ride, we ducked into a low Berber tent (they call it a haima). The air inside smelled like sweet mint and wood smoke. Mint tea came in little glasses—hotter than I expected—and there was gentle music playing outside. Our guide told us stories about growing up nearby; he even pointed out where his family used to herd goats along those same trails. When it was time to head back, I almost didn’t want to leave that calm behind.
