Summary

Snorkeling rivers, jungle trails and hammock siestas at Xel-Ha

You’ll float down crystal-clear rivers at Xel-Ha, taste local honey from melipona bees, hike shaded jungle trails and unwind in hammocks under palm trees. With all-inclusive access—hotel pickup, breakfast, buffet lunch and open bar—you’ll have everything covered so you can just soak up every moment in this wild corner of Mexico.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“You’ll want to try the honey here—melipona bees only live in this part of Mexico,” said our guide, Martín, right as we shuffled past the Meliponary. I’d never tasted honey that floral before; it was almost citrusy. The morning air was sticky but not too hot yet, and you could hear birds chattering somewhere above the palms. We’d barely gotten our wristbands when Martín handed us snorkel gear and pointed toward the water—he grinned like he knew what was coming.

The river at Xel-Ha is so clear you can see your own toes waving around underwater (and a lot of little fish who seem just as curious). We floated on those big round tubes for a while, drifting under tangled roots and patches of sunlight. At one point I lost track of everyone else—just me, my clumsy paddling, and a heron standing like a statue on the bank. Later, we wandered the jungle paths to the Plant Nursery. The air smelled green somehow—like wet leaves and something sweet I couldn’t place. There were families everywhere but it didn’t feel crowded. Kids laughing near Children’s World, couples napping in hammocks strung between trees.

Lunch was a blur of plates—buffet style so we tried everything (the ceviche was surprisingly good for a park buffet). Someone behind me ordered a michelada at 11am and nobody blinked; open bar rules apparently. After eating too much we climbed up to the Scenic Lighthouse for that panoramic view—I’m not great with heights but honestly? Worth it for how blue everything looked from up there. It’s one of those places where time gets weird; hours pass but you’re never really rushing anywhere.

I still think about floating in that river with the sun warming my face—and how I somehow ended up with two different flip-flops by the end (don’t ask). If you’re looking for an all-inclusive day trip from Cancun or Playa del Carmen that’s more than just sitting on a beach, Xel-Ha is… well, it’s hard to explain until you’re drifting there yourself.
