This is your chance to learn surfing basics right on Playa del Carmen’s beach with a friendly local guide. Practice paddling and popping up in warm waves, then relax at Fusion Beach Bar with your group after rinsing off. You’ll leave salty-haired and smiling — maybe still thinking about that one wave days later.
“You’ll fall in love with the water,” our instructor Marco said, grinning as he handed me a board that looked way bigger than I expected. The sand was already warm under my feet even though it wasn’t even 10am yet. There was this salty breeze coming off the sea — not strong, just enough to make my hair stick to my sunscreened face. We started right there on the beach, practicing how to pop up (I definitely made it look harder than it should be). Marco showed us how to read the waves and kept repeating, “Don’t fight the ocean — let it carry you.” I liked that.
Getting into the water was honestly the part I’d been nervous about. The surf lesson in Playa del Carmen is for beginners, but still — those first few seconds when you’re lying flat on the board and paddling out? My arms felt like noodles. But then I caught my first little wave (well, whitewater, but still) and actually stood up for half a second before tumbling off. I heard someone from our group laugh — not meanly, more like cheering me on. The water tasted weirdly sweet after all that sunscreen. Marco kept close by, giving tips without hovering too much. He even taught us a bit about lineup etiquette; apparently there are unspoken rules out here.
Afterwards we rinsed off and sat under these faded umbrellas at Fusion Beach Bar, sand still stuck between my toes. The club gives you a discount if you want a drink or snack after your lesson — which I did, because wow, surfing is hungry work. Someone ordered ceviche and we all shared it; I tried saying “gracias” with a mouthful and nearly choked (don’t do that). The whole thing felt relaxed and local — no pressure to be perfect or cool or anything.
I keep thinking about that feeling of standing up for just a second, sun in my eyes and everything loud and bright around me. If you’ve ever wondered whether you could actually learn to surf in Playa del Carmen… well, turns out you can — even if you’re clumsy like me.
Nope! It’s designed for beginners as well as those with some experience. The instructor adjusts tips for everyone.
A swimsuit, towel, your own rash guard if you have one (they provide them too), sunscreen, and maybe dry clothes for after.
Yes — surfboard with leash, rash guard, eco-friendly sunscreen for your face are all included.
The lessons start right on Playa del Carmen beach near Fusion Beach Bar Cuisine; easy to find from town center.
Your day includes use of a surfboard with leash, eco-friendly sunscreen for your face so you don’t burn out there, access to showers and bathrooms at the club after your session (trust me: necessary), plus a rash guard if you need one. There’s also a 15% discount at Fusion Beach Bar or Muza Surf Bar when you want something cold or fresh after all that paddling around.
