Summary

Limuru Tea Farm Experience: History, Nature & Local Flavors

You’ll get a real taste of Kenyan history and daily life at Kiambethu Tea Farm—from sipping fresh tea with locals to walking among ancient trees and monkeys. If you want an easy escape from Nairobi’s buzz and a proper farm-to-table lunch, this trip is worth it.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The drive out of Nairobi is always a little noisy at first—matatus honking, city air thick with morning smells. But by the time we reached Limuru, everything felt different. The air was crisp, almost chilly even though the sun was out. At Kiambethu Tea Farm, Fiona greeted us with a warm smile and handed us mugs of milky Kenyan tea. She started sharing stories about her grandfather, AB McDonell—the first to grow and sell tea here over a century ago. It’s wild to think that Kenya’s tea industry began right on these rolling green hills.

After our first cup (honestly, I had two), we wandered into the fields where rows of bright green tea bushes stretched as far as you could see. Our guide—a local who seemed to know every plant by name—showed us how the leaves are picked and explained why only the top two leaves matter for good tea. There was this earthy smell in the air, mixed with something sweet from nearby flowers. We spotted a flash of black-and-white up in the trees—Colobus monkeys watching us as we walked through the indigenous forest. The guide pointed out wild herbs used for medicine; I’d never have noticed them otherwise.

Lunch was served on the verandah overlooking endless tea fields and distant Ngong Hills. The food? All fresh from their garden—vegetables so crisp they snapped under your fork, and dessert topped with thick cream from their own cows. I lingered over my plate just to soak up that view a bit longer before heading back to Nairobi.
