If you want to get off the crowded pistes and explore real mountain terrain near Almaty, this backcountry ski tour is your ticket. You'll ride untouched powder with an expert guide, discover secret spots only locals know, and sharpen your freeride skills—all with transfers and safety gear sorted for you.
Boots crunching on fresh snow, we loaded our gear into the van just as the sun started to peek over Almaty's skyline. The city felt miles away within minutes—our guide, Timur, chatted about his favorite lines as we wound up narrow mountain roads. You could smell pine and woodsmoke drifting from a lone hut near the trailhead. It was cold, but not biting—perfect for a day off-piste.
We dropped below the treeline, where the snow was deep and soft underfoot. No lift lines here—just our small group and endless white slopes. Timur pointed out a hidden couloir he'd scouted last week; we took turns carving through it, hooting as powder flew up around our boots. In between runs, we caught our breath and watched clouds roll over distant peaks. I noticed a tiny tea stand tucked behind some trees—locals sometimes set up there on weekends, selling hot black tea in glass cups. It hit the spot after a couple of long descents.
The pace was relaxed but steady—Timur checked avalanche beacons before each new run and made sure everyone felt comfortable with the terrain. Some folks in our group were new to backcountry skiing; others had years of experience, but everyone found something to push their limits just enough. By late afternoon, legs burning in that good way, we piled back into the van for the ride down to Almaty. The city lights looked almost unreal after a day surrounded by nothing but snow and silence.
This trip is best if you can ski or snowboard confidently on piste. If you're new to off-piste or freeride, that's fine—our guides will match routes to your skill level.
Bring your own ski or snowboard gear and wear warm layers. Avalanche safety equipment is provided if you need it.
The drive takes about 40-60 minutes depending on road conditions and where we're riding that day.
No lunch is included, but there are sometimes local vendors selling tea or snacks at popular trailheads. We recommend packing something easy to eat on the go.
Your day includes all transfers from Almaty and back, plus any rides needed during the tour itself. You'll have an experienced ski guide leading every run, and avalanche safety gear can be provided if you don't have your own.
