Private tokyo food tour with tsukiji market and local guide

You’ll wander Tokyo’s legendary fish markets with a local guide who knows every shortcut and snack stall. Taste fresh street food at Tsukiji, see Toyosu’s modern market action, explore Asakusa’s temple streets and quirky kitchenware shops — all at your own pace. Expect laughter, new flavors, and small surprises around every corner.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“Don’t worry if you get lost — everyone does at least once,” our guide, Emi, grinned as we squeezed into the side entrance of Tsukiji Market. I’d barely finished my coffee and already the air was thick with that salty-fresh smell you only get near the sea (and, honestly, a little bit of grilled eel). We followed Emi through narrow lanes where vendors called out in rapid Japanese, waving trays of uni and tuna so bright it almost looked fake. I tried to say thank you in Japanese to one old man selling tamagoyaki — he laughed and handed me a sample anyway. It was still warm, sweet and eggy.

After that, we hopped the subway to Toyosu Fish Market. It’s huge — all glass and steel, nothing like the old Tsukiji chaos. Emi pointed out the observation windows where chefs watch the tuna auctions (we missed it by hours; apparently you have to wake up at 5am for that). Still, just seeing those massive bluefin lined up below was wild. She explained how Toyosu replaced Tsukiji for wholesale but locals still come back to Tsukiji for street food. Makes sense now why both are on this private Tokyo food tour — you get the best of both worlds.

We wandered through Asakusa after that, past Kaminarimon Gate’s giant lantern and onto Nakamise Street. The crowd here felt different: more families, more laughter, people buying little rice crackers or plastic-wrapped sweets from shops older than my grandparents. Emi told us about her favorite snack — fried mochi — so we tried it too (chewy outside, gooey inside; I’m still thinking about it). At Kappabashi Street she showed us those weirdly realistic plastic food models restaurants use in their windows. I almost bought a fake bowl of ramen as a souvenir but chickened out at the last minute.

The whole day felt like tagging along with a friend who knows every shortcut and secret snack spot. There were moments I just stopped and listened: shopkeepers chatting in soft Tokyo dialects, distant temple bells somewhere behind us. By the end my feet hurt but I didn’t really care — there’s something about walking these neighborhoods with someone local that makes Tokyo feel less overwhelming, you know?
