inclusions

What’s included

Your day includes an English-speaking local guide from Nagoya who meets you at your hotel or Nagoya Station around 9:45 AM (flexible). You’ll use public transportation or taxis as preferred (tickets not included), explore historic sites like Hommaru palace inside Nagoya Castle grounds—even while the main tower is closed—and wander arcades and temples before returning to your chosen drop-off point.

We met our guide, Saki, right in the lobby—she waved a little too enthusiastically and I liked her instantly. The subway was busy but somehow not chaotic, just a low hum of people heading somewhere else. First stop: Nagoya Castle. Even though the main tower’s closed for repairs (Saki apologized like it was her fault), we still wandered through the Hommaru palace. Tatami mats underfoot, that faint scent of old wood and something floral I couldn’t place. She pointed out where samurai would have waited for orders—I tried to picture it but mostly just felt small in those huge rooms.

The castle grounds had a couple of guys dressed as samurai posing for photos—one handed me a plastic sword and grinned when I tried to look fierce (my partner took about fifty photos). Weather was mild; cherry blossoms barely hanging on. We walked toward the TV Tower next, Saki telling us stories about how locals call the fountain “Spaceship Aqua.” It does kind of look like something out of an old sci-fi movie. I noticed how everyone here seems to move with purpose but never rushes—maybe that’s just me projecting.

Lunch was in Sakae. Saki suggested miso katsu (“Nagoya style!”) so we went for it. The sauce is richer than anything I’ve tasted back home—almost chocolatey? She laughed when I tried to say “hitsumabushi” (I butchered it) and showed us how locals eat it three different ways. After that we wandered Osu Kannon arcade—packed with smells: incense from the temple, fried chicken from some tiny stall, perfume from teenagers shopping for vintage clothes. Saki showed us how to bow at the shrine without looking too clueless; she even made a joke about her own clumsy first time.

By late afternoon my feet were tired but I didn’t really want it to end yet. We stopped by Hoshoin temple—a little quieter there—and Saki explained some local rituals before walking us back toward the station. There’s something about seeing a city through someone who grew up there; you notice things you’d never spot alone. Still think about that miso katsu sometimes.
