What’s included

Your morning includes guided entry to Arashiyama Park’s bamboo grove, early access to Kinkaku-ji temple grounds as they open, and time at Fushimi Inari Shrine—all led by a knowledgeable local guide who shares stories along the way.

I almost missed my alarm for this Kyoto early bird walking tour — I’d set it for PM by accident (classic), but somehow woke up just in time. We met our guide, Yuki, who had this gentle way of talking, like she was letting us in on a secret. The city felt half-asleep as we set off. I could still smell last night’s rain on the stone paths, and honestly, my shoes were a bit damp. First stop: Arashiyama Park. The bamboo forest was empty except for us and one old man sweeping leaves. I tried to record the sound of the wind knocking the stalks together but ended up just standing there listening instead. It’s softer than you’d think — not quite music, but close.

By the time we reached Kinkaku-ji, the sun was just starting to hit the gold leaf. Yuki told us about samurai who used to come here to reflect (literally and otherwise). There were only a few other people around — one couple whispering in French, a jogger who nodded at us. The pond was so still that morning that I could see every ripple from the koi below. I took way too many photos but none of them really caught how bright it looked against all that green. Sometimes you just have to stand there and let your eyes do the work, you know?

Fushimi Inari Shrine came last — those vermilion torii gates stacked up like dominoes stretching into forever. Yuki explained how each gate is donated after someone’s wish comes true; she pointed out names carved into the wood (I tried reading one out loud and she laughed — apparently my Japanese accent is tragic). We offered a quick prayer — not sure if I did it right but it felt honest enough. My legs were definitely feeling all 15,000 steps by then but somehow I didn’t mind. There was this faint smell of incense mixed with earth and moss that stuck with me all day.
