What’s included

Your day includes hotel pickup and drop-off, all entry fees and taxes covered upfront, an English-speaking local guide who knows their way around every corner of Kochi, plus time for lunch at Hirome Market where you can sample regional specialties before heading back in comfort.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what to expect from a day trip in Kochi. It’s not the kind of place that jumps out in guidebooks, but there was something about the way our guide—Yuki—smiled when she talked about her city that made me curious. We started at Kochi Castle, which sits above the town like it’s been watching for centuries (and actually has). The wood inside is worn smooth, and you can still smell a hint of cedar if you press your hand to the railing. Yuki pointed out how rare it is for a Japanese castle to have all its original buildings together—I think there are only a dozen left like this. Standing on the top floor, looking out over tiled roofs and tangled streets below, I felt oddly calm. Maybe it was just the breeze up there.

After that we wandered through Makino Botanical Garden—so many shades of green I lost count—and then slipped into Chikurinji Temple right next door. There was incense drifting in the air and somewhere a bell chimed. I tried to copy how locals bowed at the entrance but probably looked awkward (Yuki just grinned). She told us about a “secret” Buddha statue hidden away for decades; I liked that some things here are meant to stay mysterious. The garden paths were soft with moss and my shoes made almost no sound.

Lunch was at Hirome Market, which honestly felt like walking into someone else’s family reunion—noisy, warm, everybody waving chopsticks around. We found a spot by an older couple grilling katsuo tataki (bonito fish), and they showed us how to sprinkle salt and garlic before eating it. I’m still thinking about that smoky flavor days later. There were so many stalls I got lost twice trying to find my way back from the restroom (which Yuki found very funny). If you’re after polished or fancy, this isn’t it—but if you want real life and laughter echoing off metal tables, well…

I left with my shoes smelling faintly of grass and smoke, head full of temple bells and voices from the market. Not everything made sense right away—but maybe that’s why it stuck with me.
