What’s included

Your day includes private hotel pickup and drop-off anywhere on Jamaica’s north or south coast (just pick your location), sightseeing along scenic routes between stops, round-trip transfers in an air-conditioned vehicle with a local guide who knows every shortcut—and plenty of stories along the way.

We rolled out of Montego Bay just after sunrise—still half asleep, honestly—and our driver, Marlon, was already humming Bob Marley. There’s something about Jamaican mornings: the air is thick but not heavy, and everything feels slower. By the time we reached YS Falls (it’s about two hours if you don’t stop for patties), I’d woken up enough to notice how green everything was. The falls themselves are loud in a good way—seven tiers crashing down, mist on your face, and kids daring each other to jump in. I tried the zipline over the water even though my hands were shaking (nerves? excitement? probably both). The pool below is cold but not freezing. I still remember the smell of wet earth and ginger lilies everywhere.

Marlon knew everyone—he waved at a woman selling mangoes by the road and she handed us a couple without asking for money (“just taste!”). Next up was Black River Safari. We hopped into this flat pontoon boat with Captain Desmond, who had a laugh like thunder and could spot crocodiles before anyone else. He told stories about the river’s history while we drifted past mangroves; I kept waiting for a croc to pop up right next to us (one did, eventually—just its eyes above water). The whole thing felt part adventure, part slow meditation. There was this moment when all you could hear was birds and the boat engine idling low—it stuck with me.

I didn’t expect to care much about rum but Appleton Estate surprised me. The tour winds through old sugar cane fields—you can smell molasses in the air—and ends with a tasting that left me grinning like an idiot (the 12-year blend is trouble). Our guide, Simone, teased me for making a face at my first sip—“You get used to it,” she said, laughing. We bought a bottle to take home but honestly I wish I’d grabbed two.

If you’ve got time (and if YS or Appleton isn’t closed that day), you can swap one stop for Floyd’s Pelican Bar—a shack out on stilts in the sea where they serve ice-cold Red Stripe and play dominoes with strangers. We didn’t make it this time, but Marlon swore it’s “the real Jamaica.” Maybe next round.
