experience

What’s the experience like?

I’d heard about the Luminous Lagoon near Falmouth, but honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The idea of water lighting up around you sounded almost made up. But when our driver picked us up from the hotel (right on time, which surprised me for some reason), there was this quiet excitement in the van. It was humid out, and you could smell the salt and something sweet — maybe sugarcane? Anyway, we got to the marina just as dusk started to settle in. The boats were all lined up, their paint chipped here and there, and a few locals were laughing at something I couldn’t quite catch.

Our guide — I think his name was Andre — had this easy way about him. He explained how the lagoon glows because of these tiny phytoplankton that light up when you move the water. He said it like he’d told the story a thousand times but still found it cool. We climbed into one of those low boats (I nearly tripped on the edge, but Andre just grinned and steadied me). When we got out onto the water, he cut the engine and told us to dip our hands in. At first nothing happened, but then — blue sparks everywhere. It’s hard to describe; it looked like someone shook glitter under the surface.

I didn’t plan on swimming (the idea felt weird at night), but seeing everyone else jump in changed my mind. The water was warm and soft, almost slippery somehow. Every movement made these ghostly trails of light swirl around your arms and legs. Someone started singing quietly — not sure if it was a local or another guest — and it echoed over the water. I laughed out loud when I tried to float on my back and accidentally swallowed a mouthful (tasted salty, obviously). Andre kept an eye on everyone from the boat, cracking jokes about “glow-in-the-dark tourists.”

The whole thing lasted maybe half an hour? Time felt strange out there — you lose track between the dark sky and all that glowing blue. On the way back, nobody talked much; we just listened to the engine hum and watched droplets sparkle off our skin. I still think about that feeling sometimes — being surrounded by light in all that darkness.
