Summary

Private Day Trip: Blue Hole Mineral Spring & Sunset at Rick’s Cafe

If you're looking for an easygoing day trip with real Jamaican flavor—swimming in mineral springs, cliff jumping (or just watching), reggae tunes, and sunsets over Negril—this private tour covers it all without rushing you along.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We started our day with a friendly pick-up right from our hotel lobby—no waiting around outside in the heat. The drive out of Montego Bay took about an hour and a half, winding through little towns where you’ll spot roadside fruit stalls and kids waving as you pass by. Our driver, Devon, pointed out a few hidden jerk shacks along the way (I made a mental note for next time). If you’re coming from Negril, it’s a much shorter ride—maybe half an hour tops.

The Blue Hole Mineral Spring isn’t flashy from the outside, but once you step in, there’s this cool hush in the air and the faint smell of limestone. Locals hang out by the edge, chatting or daring each other to jump. I watched one of the lifeguards leap off a tree branch—must’ve been 50 feet up—and land with barely a splash. If you’re feeling brave, you can jump from 22 feet yourself or just climb down the ladder into that chilly blue water. There’s also a regular pool fed by the same spring if heights aren’t your thing. The bar serves cold Red Stripe and grilled chicken—nothing fancy but hits the spot after swimming. Volleyball nets are set up nearby; we joined a quick game with some folks from Kingston who visit every summer.

After drying off (the sun here does it fast), we headed to Rick’s Cafe in Negril. The place is lively—reggae music drifting over chatter and laughter. Divers put on a show every hour or so, flipping off cliffs while everyone cheers them on. We grabbed seats near the edge with rum punches in hand and watched the sky turn orange over the sea. The sunset here really is something else—you’ll see people line up just to snap photos as boats drift by below. Food’s not included but worth trying; I went for jerk shrimp tacos while my friend stuck with fries and a cold Ting soda.
