Summary

Etna’s old craters, lava caves and Sicilian flavors in one morning

You’ll start your day with pickup in Catania, then walk ancient craters on Mount Etna with a local guide who brings the volcano’s stories to life. Explore a real lava cave (helmet included), pause for sweeping views over Valle del Bove, and finish with tastings of honey, olive oil, pesto, and wine at an Etna farm. It’s not just scenery — you’ll feel Sicily under your feet.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I’d always seen photos of Mount Etna but standing there, early in the morning with the air still cool and smelling faintly of ash and wild herbs, it felt different — heavier somehow. Our guide, Marco (who grew up nearby), picked us up right at our apartment in Catania. He joked about how locals can tell what kind of mood Etna’s in just by looking at her smoke. I tried to spot it myself as we drove along the coast past Acitrezza — those weird lava stacks poking out of the sea — but honestly I was too distracted by the way the light hit everything gold.

The trekking part wasn’t hard — more like a long walk over crunchy black gravel that got into my shoes (should’ve worn higher socks). Marco stopped often to point out old craters from the 1892 eruption; he told stories about his grandfather seeing the mountain “spit fire” as a kid. At one point we ducked into a lava tube with helmets and flashlights (felt a bit silly at first), but inside it was silent except for our footsteps echoing off cold stone. The air tasted metallic. I didn’t expect to enjoy that part so much.

We paused above Valle del Bove — this huge bowl carved out by eruptions — and just stood there for a while not saying much. Someone in our group tried to pronounce Zafferana Etnea and totally mangled it; Marco laughed so hard he nearly dropped his water bottle. Later we stopped at a farm where they let us taste honey straight from the comb, plus olive oil and some kind of pesto I still think about when I’m hungry late at night. The wine was strong for before noon but nobody complained.
