Summary

Explore Lucca’s streets, towers, and quiet corners on foot

Stroll through Lucca’s historic center with a local guide who shares stories behind every square and tower. You’ll explore ancient streets, walk atop the city walls, visit landmarks like Torre Guinigi and the Duomo di Lucca, and get small glimpses of daily life—leaving you with moments you’ll remember long after leaving Tuscany.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I felt a weird kind of calm as we stepped into Lucca’s old city — maybe it was the way the light bounced off those pale stone walls, or just how everyone seemed to move a little slower here. Our guide, Francesca, greeted us near the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro with this big smile and a folded map (which I immediately crumpled in my bag — sorry Francesca). She started telling us about gladiators and ancient markets right where we stood, but honestly, I kept getting distracted by the smell of coffee drifting from somewhere nearby. It was one of those mornings where you want to listen but also just soak up everything at once.

We wandered through narrow streets that felt like they hadn’t changed much in centuries. Francesca pointed out tiny details — like the faded family crests above doorways and a bakery that’s apparently older than most countries. At one point she asked if we’d noticed how quiet it was compared to Florence or Pisa. She was right; even with kids darting around on scooters and someone singing (badly) from an open window, there was this softness to the city’s sounds. When we reached Torre Guinigi, she told us about the oak trees growing on top — I still can’t decide if that’s genius or just odd.

The walk along Lucca’s city walls was my favorite part. There’s this gentle breeze up there and you get these glimpses into gardens and courtyards below — sometimes you catch laughter or someone hanging laundry in the sun. Francesca showed us where locals jog or picnic, and I tried to imagine living here, just for a second. We ended at the Duomo di Lucca; she explained some story about saints (I’ll admit I lost track), but standing under those arches felt quietly grand. The whole thing wasn’t rushed — more like being shown around by someone who actually lives here.
