experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the sound — that gentle slap of water against the hull as we pulled away from the little jetty in Como. Our captain (he introduced himself as Marco, but everyone just called him “Cap”) grinned and handed out glasses of prosecco. I’m not usually a bubbly-at-10am person, but it felt right. The lake was this pale blue-green under a sky that couldn’t decide if it wanted to be cloudy or not. There was a faint smell of wet stone and something floral drifting off the shore — maybe wisteria? I didn’t ask.

We glided past Cernobbio first, Cap pointing out the “shore” where apparently half of Hollywood has stayed at some point. Someone tried to spot George Clooney’s villa (no luck). When we passed Moltrasio, he slowed down so we could see the old Versace place — all statues and manicured trees, almost too perfect. A couple on board whispered about how much it must cost to live there. I just liked watching the sunlight flicker through the leaves and hit the water in these weird patterns. For a minute nobody said anything, which honestly felt kind of rare on group tours.

Later we crossed over toward Torno and Blevio, smaller towns with faded pastel houses stacked up against steep hillsides. Cap told us a story about a Russian tsar building one of the villas — I probably missed half of it because I was distracted by this little dog barking madly from someone’s balcony. It’s funny what sticks with you. We looped back toward Como after that; my prosecco was long gone but I didn’t really mind. There was this easy feeling among everyone on board — like we’d shared something quietly special even if we’d only met an hour before.
