What’s included

Your trip includes pickup from your guesthouse in Bukit Lawang by your local guide, all entry permits for Gunung Leuser’s rainforest trails, lunch during trekking days plus dinner and breakfast at camp with tea or coffee always brewing nearby. You’ll sleep under a sturdy leaf-roofed shelter with mattress, blanket, pillow and mosquito net provided—and finish your adventure rafting back downriver before returning to town around midday.

“If you’re lucky,” our guide Rini grinned as we ducked under a low branch, “the Thomas Leaf monkeys will throw fruit at you. It means they like you.” I wasn’t sure if she was joking or not—she had that kind of smile—but five minutes later something small and green bounced off my backpack and she just winked. The air in Gunung Leuser was thick and earthy, almost sweet after last night’s rain. We’d started from Bukit Lawang early, following Rini along the riverbank with two other trekkers who’d barely slept from excitement. I kept stopping to listen—somewhere above us a gibbon whooped, and every now and then Rini would pause to point out a flash of orange fur high up in the canopy. Wild orangutans really do move like slow-motion acrobats. I tried to take a photo but mostly just stared.

Lunch was banana leaf rice by a lookout where the whole valley opened up below us—mist curling over the trees, everything impossibly green. My legs were jelly already (I’m not exactly an athlete) but somehow it didn’t matter. By late afternoon we reached camp: a big wooden frame tucked under giant leaves beside the river. The water was cold enough to make me yelp when I jumped in but also perfect after sweating all day. Someone brewed coffee over a tiny fire while Rini pointed out an orangutan building her nest across the river (“She’ll use those branches—watch”). Dinner was simple but tasted better than anything; we played cards until someone fell asleep mid-sentence.

I woke before sunrise to bird calls so loud it felt like being inside an orchestra pit. Breakfast came decorated with flowers Rini had found nearby (she said it’s good luck). Some people went for another hike but I just sat on a rock watching light move through the trees—I still think about that quiet hour sometimes. Later we packed up and floated back down the Bahorok River on knotted rubber tires—Rini called it our “jungle taxi.” It was bumpy and ridiculous and everyone got soaked; I couldn’t stop laughing even when I swallowed half the river by accident.

Back in Bukit Lawang by lunchtime, shoes full of sand and hair full of leaves, I realized I hadn’t checked my phone once since we left. Not sure what else to say except: if you want to see wild orangutans up close—and feel like part of their world for a bit—this is probably as real as it gets.
