What’s included

Your day includes private transportation with hotel pickup and drop-off across main Bali areas; bottled water; all safety equipment; about two hours each of Ayung River rafting and ATV riding; insurance coverage; shower facilities; plus a buffet Indonesian lunch overlooking the jungle before heading back in comfort.

The first thing I noticed was the sound — not loud, but steady, that kind of river noise you feel in your chest before you even see the water. Our guide, Wayan, grinned as he handed me a paddle. I thought I’d be nervous but honestly, the air was so warm and the jungle so green that my brain just sort of went quiet for a second. We pushed off into the Ayung River near Ubud, and it wasn’t long before we were laughing at ourselves trying to steer straight. The rapids weren’t wild (I’m no athlete), but they were enough to get your heart going. At one point we stopped by this little waterfall — cold spray on my face, sun on my arms — and I remember thinking how much better it felt than any hotel pool.

After drying off (sort of — my shoes never really recovered), we sat down for lunch at the rafting company’s spot overlooking the jungle. The buffet was mostly Indonesian food: spicy chicken, some kind of fried noodles, watermelon that tasted like actual sunshine. A couple from Jakarta sat next to us and taught me how to say “enak” when something tastes good. Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin — probably butchered it. It all felt easy somehow, like everyone had just come in from playing outside together.

I didn’t expect to love the ATV part as much as I did. The bikes looked intimidating but once you get moving through those muddy tracks beside rice fields and under bamboo arches, it’s weirdly peaceful — except when you hit a bump and splash mud everywhere (my shirt will never be the same). Kids waved from a village lane; an old man nodded as we passed his house with chickens everywhere. The whole thing was sweaty and messy and honestly way more fun than I thought sightseeing could be. By late afternoon I was tired in that good way you get after actually doing something new instead of just watching.
