You’ll hike above Batur caldera at sunrise, meditate in mountain air, learn about Balinese healing plants firsthand, cross Lake Batur by boat to a lakeside temple for blessings, and sample fresh local fruit on your way back—all with a friendly guide who shares real stories along the way.
It’s still dark when we set out, the air up here at Batur caldera feeling almost chilly on my arms. Our guide hands out hiking sticks—trust me, you’ll want one for the rocky bits—and we start the slow climb. There’s this earthy smell from the wet ground and a quiet hum of insects waking up. By the time we reach the top, a soft orange glow is spreading over the lake and that central cone. The mist hangs low in the valley; it looks unreal. We sit together for a while, just listening to our own breath and letting the silence settle in. I didn’t expect mountain air in Bali to feel this crisp.
After breakfast—simple but honestly delicious—we head down through fields dotted with wild herbs. Our guide stops often, pointing out leaves I’ve never seen before and explaining what locals use them for: headaches, stomach aches, even sleep troubles. You can actually smell some of them as you brush past. At Batur Lake, a fisherman waves us over to his small boat. Crossing the water is peaceful; you hear nothing but paddles dipping and birds calling from somewhere in the reeds.
The temple sits right by the water’s edge. We’re shown how to make an offering—flowers, incense—and say our wishes out loud before receiving a blessing from the priest. It feels personal and somehow grounding. On our way back toward Ubud, we pass roadside stalls where farmers sell fruit straight from their gardens; I grabbed a handful of tiny sweet bananas for later.
You should be comfortable walking uphill for about an hour on uneven ground. It’s not extreme but does require moderate fitness.
Absolutely! Just let us know your preference when booking and we’ll arrange it for you.
This experience isn’t recommended if you’re pregnant or have spinal or heart conditions due to the hike and boat ride.
Wear layers—it’s cool at sunrise but warms up fast. Bring comfy shoes and maybe a hat or sunscreen for later in the morning.
Your private transport is sorted both ways. We provide sarongs and temple offerings for ceremonies, hiking sticks for comfort on the trail, plus breakfast (vegetarian or not—just ask). All you need is your sense of adventure!
