You’ll ride through Cochin’s real streets in a tuk tuk—seeing historic churches, lively markets, secret temples, and those iconic fishing nets up close. Local guides share stories you won’t find in guidebooks. If you want to feel the city’s pulse—not just see its postcard spots—this is your tour.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The air was thick with the scent of cardamom as our tuk tuk zipped past spice stalls in Mattancherry. Our driver, Sabu, waved at a chai vendor he knew—everyone seemed to know him here. We rattled down narrow lanes where painted walls peeled in the sun, and every turn brought something new: a flash of temple bells, a burst of laughter from school kids dodging puddles after last night’s rain.

First stop was St. Francis Church. The old stone walls felt cool inside, almost damp from the morning humidity. Sabu pointed out Vasco da Gama’s original tomb—easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. Just outside, we caught the salty breeze off Fort Kochi Beach and watched fishermen haul in their catch using those famous Chinese fishing nets. The wooden beams creaked as they worked; you could hear gulls squabbling overhead.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica stood tall nearby—its stained glass glowed even on a cloudy day. We ducked into the Indo-Portuguese Museum for a quick look at colonial relics (the carved wooden altar was my favorite). Then it was on to Jew Town, where the Paradesi Synagogue sits tucked between antique shops and spice warehouses. The blue-and-white tiles inside are cool underfoot, and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch the caretaker telling stories about the old Jewish families who still live here.

Mattancherry Palace had murals so vivid they almost looked wet with paint, even though some are centuries old. Outside, we wandered through spice corners—cinnamon bark piled high next to sacks of peppercorns—and peeked into tiny Jain temples hidden behind faded doors. By midday, the heat picked up but bottled water kept us going (thankfully included). Last stop: Dutch Cemetery, quiet except for crows hopping between mossy headstones.
