experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me was the smell—spicy, sweet, a bit smoky—right as we stepped onto Girgaum Chowpatty. It’s busy here in the evenings; families chatting, kids darting around with sticky hands. Our guide, Sameer, waved us over to a stall where he swore by their dahi puri. I’d never tasted anything quite like it—crunchy shells filled with yogurt and chutney, a little messy but worth it. We tried pav bhaji too, scooping up buttery bread with spicy mashed veggies while the sun slipped behind the Arabian Sea. The sand was still warm underfoot.

Later, we caught a cab up to the Hanging Gardens. The air felt cooler up there, and you could hear birds more than horns for once. Locals were out for their evening walks; some stopped to point out the animal-shaped hedges—there’s one trimmed like an elephant that made us laugh. From the edge of the gardens, you get this wide view of Marine Drive—the Queen’s Necklace all lit up after dark. Our guide said it’s his favorite spot in Mumbai for sunsets, and I get why now.
