What’s included

Your day includes entry to Dharavi itself plus bottled water along the way so you can focus on exploring both commercial workshops and residential streets with your local guide by your side throughout.

We ducked off the main road and suddenly everything changed — the air felt heavier, warmer, carrying that mix of chai spices and something like clay. Our guide, Arif, waved us along a narrow lane where kids darted past shouting to each other in Hindi (I tried not to get in their way). He grew up here, he said, and pointed out the patchwork rooftops — blue tarps, corrugated metal, laundry everywhere. It’s busy but somehow calm at the same time; I didn’t expect that.

Inside one of the small workshops — honestly more like a room than a factory — men were sorting scraps of plastic by hand. The sound was constant: clinks, shuffles, someone’s radio playing old Bollywood songs. Arif explained how these little businesses keep Dharavi running; I’d read about it before but seeing it up close is different. At some point I caught the smell of soap from another corner (turns out there’s a little soap-making spot right next door). We moved between commercial and residential areas so quickly my sense of direction just gave up.

There was this moment when we passed a group of women chatting over buckets of laundry — one smiled at me when I tripped on an uneven step (not my smoothest move). People here notice you but don’t stare; it feels respectful somehow. By the end, I realized how much life fits into these tight spaces. I still think about that view from the rooftop — all those colors under the Mumbai sky. Hard to describe without sounding dramatic but yeah… it stuck with me.
