You’ll leave Akureyri behind for a real shot at seeing the Northern Lights—no city glare, just open sky and good company. Local guides share stories and help with photos while you sip hot chocolate under the stars.
It’s hard to explain that first moment when you step out of the warm mini-bus and the cold air hits your cheeks—sharp, but not unpleasant. Our guide, Jónas, greeted us with a grin and handed out thick blankets before we rolled out of Akureyri. The city faded behind us quick, replaced by open fields and the odd flicker of farm lights in the distance. You could smell snow in the air—sort of metallic, clean. Jónas kept us entertained with stories about Icelandic elves and old winter traditions as we bumped along gravel roads.
We stopped somewhere I’d never find on my own—a wide patch of countryside where the sky felt huge. Everyone shuffled around quietly, eyes up. It’s funny how quiet people get when they’re waiting for something big. The wind rattled the bus door now and then, but mostly it was just boots crunching on ice and someone pouring hot chocolate into paper cups (the steam fogged up my glasses). When the Northern Lights finally showed up—green at first, then streaks of pink—Jónas helped us set up our cameras. He even snapped some photos you could buy later if yours turned out blurry (mine did). If you don’t see any lights that night, they’ll let you try again for free the next evening if there’s another group going out.
If there are no lights during your tour, you can join again for free on the next available group night.
