Summary

Glacier adventure from Gullfoss with monster truck ride stories and Icelandic treats

You’ll ride a massive monster truck across Langjokull Glacier from Gullfoss with a local guide sharing stories along the way. Warm up at a glacier café with hot cocoa and Kleinur pastries, try pure glacier water, and maybe even sled or play golf on the ice. Expect moments of laughter—and silence—that stick with you long after.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We climbed up into this huge red truck at the upper parking lot near Gullfoss—honestly, it looked more like something out of a sci-fi movie than anything I’d ever ridden. The air was sharp (not freezing, but close), and our guide, Einar, had that dry Icelandic sense of humor that sneaks up on you. He pointed out the way the landscape changed as we left the main road—mossy lava fields giving way to endless white. I kept pressing my face to the window, trying to catch every weird shape in the snowdrifts. There’s something about riding a monster truck over Langjokull Glacier that makes you feel both tiny and kind of invincible at the same time.

The drive itself was half the fun. Einar told us stories about old trolls and how they say glaciers have their own moods (I still don’t know if he was joking). We stopped right out in the open—just blue sky, wind, and this pop-up café set up on the ice like it belonged there. Someone handed me a mug of hot chocolate so thick it almost felt like pudding, and there were these twisted pastries called Kleinur that tasted faintly of cardamom. I tried glacier water straight from a hole they’d drilled—so cold it made my teeth ache. My gloves got wet but I didn’t care; everyone was laughing about who would dare try sledding next.

I gave glacier golf a go (terrible swing, no regrets) while a couple from Spain argued cheerfully about who cheated. The light kept changing—sometimes blinding white, sometimes soft blue shadows—and for a few minutes nobody talked much at all. Just boots crunching on ice and wind rattling against the truck doors. It’s hard to explain how quiet it gets up there until you’re standing in it yourself.

On the way back toward Gullfoss, Einar played some old Icelandic music through the speakers—something haunting with lots of strings—and people dozed off or just stared out at nothing. I kept thinking about that first sip of glacier water and how weirdly proud Einar looked when we all said it tasted like “nothing,” but in a good way. So yeah, if you’re looking for an ordinary tour…this isn’t it.
