What’s included

Your day includes public transportation from Antigua to San Miguel Escobar, guided walks through family-run coffee fields at the foot of Agua volcano, all steps explained by local growers themselves, plus fresh-brewed coffee and a homemade champurrada cookie served right at your host’s kitchen table before heading back.

I still hear the crunch of dry leaves under my shoes as we stepped into the coffee fields outside Antigua—San Miguel Escobar, to be exact. The air was cool but already holding that earthy smell you get before rain. Our guide, Don Pedro, waved us over with a stained hand and pointed at the base of Agua volcano. He called it Hunapu, which I’d never heard before. The name stuck with me for some reason—maybe because he said it so softly, like it meant something more than just a mountain.

We walked between rows of coffee plants, green cherries peeking out from dark leaves. Don Pedro explained how his family’s been working this land for generations. I tried to repeat some of the words he used in Spanish—he laughed and shook his head kindly (my accent’s hopeless). At one point, we stopped so he could show us how they pick only the ripest beans by hand. It’s slower that way but he seemed proud of it. In the distance, Fuego volcano sent up a little puff of smoke—nobody else seemed fazed.

The tour ended inside Don Pedro’s house, where his wife poured us strong coffee and handed out these crumbly cookies called champurrada. They tasted sweet and a bit smoky—maybe from the wood stove? We sat around their kitchen table talking about weather and prices and what makes good coffee actually good (it’s not just the beans). I didn’t expect to feel so welcome or to leave thinking about their stories as much as the taste of that first cup.
