What’s included

Your day includes all SCUBA equipment provided by friendly instructors, a mini theory lesson in your language of choice, pickup by air-conditioned vehicle if needed, plus a small snack and bottled water once you’re back on shore—fees and taxes are all covered too.

We were already half-suited up when I realized my heart was thumping louder than the cicadas. The wetsuit felt tighter than I’d expected, but our instructor Yannis just grinned and handed me the mask—he said something in Greek that made his colleague laugh. I tried to repeat it (no idea what I actually said), and they both nodded like, “close enough.” We shuffled down to the beach near Heraklion, sand sticking everywhere. The water looked impossibly clear, almost fake-blue under the morning sun.

I’d never done scuba before—honestly, I was more nervous than I let on—but Yannis explained everything in this calm way that made it feel manageable. We practiced breathing through the regulator right there in the shallows. The first breath underwater felt weirdly loud in my ears, like being inside a fishbowl. My friend kept giving me the okay sign; I think she was trying to convince herself too. There were tiny silver fish darting around our feet and a faint smell of salt mixed with sunscreen. It’s strange how quickly you forget you’re even wearing all that gear once you’re floating.

After we got used to it, Yannis led us out a little deeper—never rushed us. He pointed out a spiky sea urchin tucked under a rock (I nearly bumped into it) and showed us how to equalize our ears without making it awkward. At one point he picked up some smooth pebbles from the seabed and handed them to us—I still have one in my pocket now, actually. Coming back up felt almost disappointing; I didn’t expect to want more so soon. We sat on the sand eating a snack they gave us (some kind of sweet bread?) and just watched the light ripple on the water for a while.
