If you want to see Nafplio beyond postcards, this hike is for you. Walk ancient paths with a local guide, visit hidden chapels, snack by the sea, and maybe swim where only locals go. It’s relaxed but full of real moments you’ll remember.
The old town of Nafplio wakes up slow—roosters somewhere, the smell of bread from that corner bakery near Syntagma Square. Our guide, Nikos, met us right by the Venetian gate. He’s lived here all his life and knows every shortcut. We set off along the narrow lanes before joining a coastal path that hugs the edge of the Argolic Gulf. The sea was calm that morning, just a few fishing boats bobbing out past the rocks.
We passed wild thyme growing between stones and heard cicadas start up as the sun climbed higher. Nikos pointed out two tiny Orthodox chapels tucked into the hillside—one with blue doors faded by salt air. Inside, it smelled faintly of beeswax and old incense. We stopped there for a breather and shared koulouri and olives while watching little waves lap at the shore below.
The trail eventually dropped us onto a long stretch of sand—nobody else around except an old man collecting driftwood. The water looked too good to pass up, so some of us took a quick swim (bring your suit if you want). On the way back, I noticed how quiet it felt compared to town—just wind in the pines and distant church bells. By noon we were back in Nafplio, shoes dusty but spirits high, already talking about where to eat next.
Yes! The route is gentle enough for most fitness levels and families with children are welcome—as long as kids are with an adult.
No need—we provide traditional picnic snacks and bottled water during our chapel break by the sea.
