You’ll get to see Ghana’s famous Akosombo Dam up close and relax on a gentle boat ride across Volta Lake. Enjoy sunrise or sunset right from the lakeside terrace—perfect for unwinding after exploring.
Early morning, the air felt cool and a bit damp as we drove towards Akosombo. Our guide, Kwame, knew every twist in the road—he even pointed out a tiny roadside stand selling fresh coconut water. When we reached the dam, you could hear the low hum of turbines mixing with birdsong. The view over the water is something else—huge, calm, almost glassy. I noticed a couple of local fishermen casting nets near the edge. Kwame shared how this dam powers much of Ghana; he seemed proud, and honestly, it’s impressive up close.
Afterwards, we headed to Aylos Bay guest house. It sits right on the lake’s edge—no fancy frills, just simple wooden chairs on the terrace and that wide-open view. We grabbed some cold drinks and watched boats drift by. The cruise itself was slow and peaceful; you can feel the breeze coming off Volta Lake and sometimes catch a whiff of grilled tilapia from nearby kitchens. If you’re lucky with timing (like us), sunrise paints everything gold, but sunset is just as good—soft light bouncing off the water while frogs start up their evening chorus.
